What Kind Of Care Does Your Senior Loved One Need?

Foothills Home Services wants your senior loved ones to get the home care they deserve while still retaining as much independence as possible.

The Hard Conversations

Remember your parents sitting you down at the table, or trapping you in the vehicle for a long drive to have a talk? Remember how you felt? The sinking stomach, holding your breath, and rapidly going through every mistake you made, trying to get ahead of the talk? Your biggest concern was being grounded and losing your independence! Well, it comes full circle, as they say. Eventually, we have to sit the senior(s) in our life down and have the talk about Homecare.

They will have feelings, just like we did when we were kids. But it has to be done, and it can be done in such a way that promotes a partnership for care, instead of taking control of their care.

Here are a few tips when you are ready to broach the subject of home care with the senior in your life:

  1.  Don’t assume!  Spend time with your seniors and observe where they might be struggling during their day. Don’t guess where their deficits are! This can lead to misunderstandings and hard feelings.

  2. Honesty is indeed the best policy, but any suggestions about home care should be delivered with empathy, patience, and kindness.

  3. Talk about homecare with your seniors in a positive way! Don’t outline what they can't do but what we can do. It will help redirect the focus from feelings of inadequacy and burden to feelings of support, love, and independence.

  4. Contact us and we can be part of the talk! We can help you! We know you have concerns and fears about navigating your parents' well-being and all the nuances that go with it. Be it their physical or mental health, we can help you do right by them so you can be at ease.

The Gift of Love

We know home care can be a contentious issue when we bring it up with our senior family members. Sometimes they feel home care is a signal to the end of their independence. But as hard as the talk can be, it is important to talk about home care sooner, rather than later. Be it with your senior, spouse, or other family members; getting the conversation going is an important first step!

Before a medical emergency makes it necessary!

Foothills Home Services can help you normalize home care for your beloved senior, by addressing the basics such as grocery runs, meal prep, housework, and other things we listed above, that you or other support people might not have time for. In this way, FHS can minimize your workload, take the physical pressure off of your beloved seniors to help them maintain independence.

Your beloved senior has lived a long time. They worked hard, loved hard, lived hard. They also survived the good, the bad, and the ugly. We want to acknowledge and support them with the help and compassionate care they deserve.

The help our trained, qualified, and dedicated caregivers can give your seniors is a gift of love and not an end to their independence. Foothills Home Services can be the aid to help them stay independent.  If you are at a stage in your life where you are thinking about home care or have questions about what is available for options when it comes to caring for the seniors in your life, we would love to hear from you - we are here to help and we love doing what we do - contact the owner Sylvia today!

It was a blessing that Mom was able to stay in her own home when without the assistance of FHS staff, she would have been in a long-term facility where she did not want to be. I feel we succeeded in assisting her to be content for the last years of her life.
