Spring is Sprung! - Supporting your senior loved one as the seasons change.

supporting seniors

Spring is the season of new beginnings! Fresh buds bloom, animals come out of hibernation, and the earth seems to come alive again! We can finally get excited about being outdoors once more and soaking in that vitamin D.

Garden Preparation

Seniors widely enjoy gardening, and it is one of the best hobbies as it offers a balance of activity for both the body and the mind. It is a great way to promote wellness and can be incredibly relaxing and satisfying. Preparing your garden for the sunny months can take quite some work.

Here is a list that we have come up with of tasks to complete this spring for yard and garden preparation:

  • Clear your garden of dead leaves and weeds

  • Prune bushes and trees

  • Plant shrubs in the earlier months

  • Prep garden beds

  • Plan out your garden!

Does this list sound a bit intimidating?

At Foothills Home Services, our skilled staff are available for 24 Hour Live-In Senior Care or daily Personal Care & Senior Support, offering help in all areas of life. We are happy to provide support with all the gardening tasks and, of course, offer companionship while your senior loved one takes back the joy of gardening! Bee Kind this Spring

Did you know that eight wild bee species are listed under Canada's species risk registry right now? Bees are beneficial to the environment as a whole. They pollinate wildflowers, enhancing biodiversity, and it is not only flowers and food crops that are pollinated by bees but many trees. Here are some tips to help create a bee-friendly garden!

  • Grow plants with nectar and pollen

  • Create bee hotels - Prepare a wooden box filled with hollow stems such as old flower stalks or bamboo canes friend thoroughly. Ideally, holes should vary in size to attract the broadest range of bees. Place your bee hotel in a sunny spot, ideally so it gets the morning sun.

  • Make bee nests

  • Help tired bees -  Mix equal parts warm water and sugar. Place it near the bee’s head in a bottle cap, and it should stick out its proboscis to drink; this solution will energize and warm up the bee allowing him to get back to work!

Outdoor Home Preparation For Seniors

As the sun shines and the snow melts away, it becomes time to tackle outdoor preparation for the spring and summer months. There are a few things to do outdoors to get ready for warmer months: cleaning the rain gutters, checking vents and changing filters, servicing the lawnmower and prepping the BBQ. At Foothills Home Services, the needs of the seniors you love are our priority, and we suggest adjusting the monthly budget and hiring a professional handyperson for all of the above tasks; these can become especially dangerous for a senior, but also any person unqualified to do so.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors With Your Senior Loved One

Spring makes getting out and about as a senior marginally easier as the possibility of slips and falls on ice and risks of hypothermia melt away!

Did you know that spending time outdoors walking or simply looking at trees lowers blood pressure and reduces the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline - nature simply makes us happy! As Spring welcomes warmer weather why not spend some time outside with your senior loved one this season and enjoy a dose of vitamin D!

  • Have a picnic or dine on a patio

  • Take normal tasks outdoors - reading, puzzles, card games

  • Go for a walk

  • Feed the ducks at a lake
